Runs NHH's international career centre

Ann-Mari Haram has taken the position as head of NHH's new international career centre.

NHH wishes to increase the number of candidates who pursue careers outside Norway. One of the measures in order to achieve this aim was to establish an international career centre at the Office of Student and Academic Affairs.

NHH-alumna and Bergen native, Ann-Mari Haram should have the perfect background when giving advice to NHH students with international career ambitions

After graduating from NHH in 1994, she started her professional career at the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs in Oslo, before moving on to a banking job at DNB in Bergen. The next step was a position at EFTA in Genève, before moving on to Copenhagen and Eurofish International Organisation, working with fisheries and aqua culture development in Eastern Europe.

After returning to Norway Haram has been self-employed and qualified for a bachelor's degree in Latin America-studies, mainly to strengthen her Spanish language skills.

"What does the job at the international career centre imply?"

"There were several reasons for establishing the centre, but the most important one is to encourage more NHH students to find work abroad. We will also offer career advice to international students who consider working in Norway, but they will need a different kind of service," Haram says.

"But why work harder in order to export Norwegian talent? If the future turns out to be as challenging as we are led to believe, surely we need all the talent we can get here at home?"

"Certainly we need the talent. But by going abroad the candidates can get more experience and skills, and different, broader perspectives. This can be beneficial for Norway in the long run, as a vast majority of the candidates who actually travel abroad to work, return home after a while," she answers.

"As in turns out, surprisingly few NHH candidates actually pursue international careers. In this perspective it's important to show them that it is possible to plan for a career across borders," she adds.

"For me, working abroad has been solely positive both professionally and personally," Haram concludes.
