Speed dating for internship

Cassandra Fredrickson Torgnes

The International Career Center at NHH (ICC) organized a Meet and Greet event for NHH's international master students 31 October this year.

05.12.2013 - Lisbeth Heilund

Two international Bergen based companies, Marine Harvest and DOF Subsea, accepted the invitation to meet and interview a limited number of students with the intention of hiring one intern each. 44 students applied, whereof 16 candidates were selected for the interview process. The process is now finalized and not only two, but four students have signed internship contracts.

The four lucky ones are Britt from Canada who will work for Marine Harvest and Cassandra, also from Canada, Jorge from Brazil and Sarah from Singapore who have signed contracts with DOF Subsea.

We talked to Cassandra Fredrickson Torgnes who will signe the internship contract with DOF Subsea in January. She is taking the Energy, Natural Resources and the Environment profile at NHH, and she starts working for DOF Subsea in January in addition to her Master degree studies.

Have you done this kind of "speed dating" before?
- Yes, I have a law degree from the University of British Columbia, and in our second year the career centre organised on-campus interviews with many of the larger law firms that hire summer interns. They functioned in much the same way as the 'meet and greet' here at NHH, with 10-15 minute interviews with the firms that had selected you based on your CV and transcripts. The 'speed dates' were later followed up with longer interviews for successful candidates.

Why did you want apply for the internship?
It can be difficult for international candidates to find jobs in Norway and I thought it would be a great opportunity to make contact with a Norwegian company.

Did you know anything about DOF Subsea before the interview?
- Yes, I knew a couple of people (Norwegians) who worked for DOF Management and they had told me that DOF is a great company to work for and that when I came to Bergen I should apply. I was going to wait until I got settled in at school before I started to apply for jobs, but then this came up near the beginning of the semester and I applied.

Cassandra is prepared for a busy semester next year with her studies in addition to working for DOF Subsea at least one day a week. She looks forward to working with lots of interesting tasks in her new job.
