NBIM invites students to summer school

The Norwegian Finance Initiative (NFI) by Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM) seeks to motivate students to do a PhD within financial economics. One of their means is to arrange a summer school in co-operation with NHH and others, and with a key lecturer from Yale.

The summer school is a coalition project between NHH, BI, NTNU, UiO and UiS.

NHH is in charge of organizing the summer school, arranged for the first time this summer.

Strengthen scientific management of the Norwegian oil fund

- NBIM is very interested in supporting talented students to do a PhD Finance and to strengthen the finance community in Norway, says Assistant Professor Michael Kisser from the Department of Finance at NHH.

Michael Kisser is in charge of the committee which has decided the program for the summer school. The committee is made up of representatives from all the partner institutions.

NBIM has initiated NFI to support research and education within financial economics, with relevance for the oil fund. The goal is to develop and strengthen the scientific foundation of the management. Relevant areas within finance are asset pricing and portfolio theory, corporate finance and corporate governance and market microstructure.

NFI has measures directed towards students, as well as the academics. For instance, they co-finance professorships and give awards to the best master thesis within relevant subjects.

Yale-professor to lecture

Kisser is very happy with the program that they have put together for the summer school.

- Professor William Goetzmann from Yale University will be the key lecturer. He has an extremely impressive academic track record, and he is also the co-author of a report on the oil fund, says Kisser.

- There will also be other Norwegian speakers, from academics. This will ensure a rich and interesting program. In addition, NFI and NBIM will give information about a PhD within financial economics and the opportunities it can offer, he adds.

Encourages students to apply

- I hope the students are not too shy to apply. You don't have to already have decided that you will take a PhD and this is not a commitment to do a PhD either. It is simply a chance to see what opportunities a PhD in financial economics can give, says Kisser.

They are primarily looking for master students, but bachelor students are also welcome to apply.
