International Day was held for the very first time on 30 October, and representatives from a number of NHH's partner schools set up stands in Aula to showcase their educational institutions. During the opening ceremony Whitney drew upon some words of wisdom from the man behind the Fulbright Scholarship, Senator J. William Fulbright.

"Exchange turns nations into people," cited Whitney and he used this statement to underline the importance of exchange for cross-cultural understanding.

Not a vacation

The 21st century demands new qualities from newly educated students. A student who is flexible and is able to absorb new cultures fast will stand stronger in the workplace. The ambassador emphasized that exchange provides the opportunity obtain these qualities.

"Exchange is not luxury or vacation. Exchange is necessary," stated Whitney.

Why the USA?

Whitney also presented a variety of reasons for choosing exchange to the United States. With over 4,000 independent educational institutions that offer higher education, it is possible to find exactly the education and school that best suits you.

NHH students know very well how it is to be a part of an active student environment. Whitney believed that this is also one of the forces of American educational institutions.

"Life on campus at many US universities is unique. Here you will find chess clubs, Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, and Communists," smiled the ambassador.

Innovation beckons

Ultimately, it may well be the US economy that beckons civil economists across the Atlantic.

"The USA has the most dynamic and innovative economy in the world. For economic students this means that the possibilities are vast," said Whitney who himself has a background from the venture capital industry.
