Karin Thorburn 50 years

Professor Karin Thorburn at the Department of Finance is 50 years on 15 September.

Karin Thorburn became a professor at NHH in 2009. She holds a bachelor's degree in economics and a PhD in financial economics from the Stockholm School of Economics.

She was a faculty member at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, USA, from 1998-2009.

Karin's research focuses on takeovers, bankruptcy, IPOs, corporate restructuring, corporate governance, and environmentally responsible investing. Her work has been published in the top academic journals, including Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and Journal of Environmental Economics and Management.

Professor Thorburn has a broad academic network. She regularly presents her work at the big academic finance conferences, and is often invited to give research seminars. She is a director of the Executive Committee of the European Finance Association; a Lindenauer Research Fellow of the Center for Corporate Governance at the Tuck School at Dartmouth; a Research Affiliate of the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London; a Research Associate of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI) in Brussels; a member of the scientific board of the European Center for Corporate Control Studies (ECCCS) in Lille, the Scientific Advisory Board to the Centre for Finance at Gothenburg University, the International Advisory Board at Hanken School of Economics, Helsinki, and the Academic Advisory Council to the U.S. Turnaround Management Association (TMA). She is also on the board of Nordea Bank Norge ASA.

Karin is often quoted in media, and has for the last six years been proactive in disseminating research on equality and women on boards, both within Scandinavia and internationally. She has been imperative to placing NHH on the international map through extensive media coverage, for instance in the Financial Times, US News, and some of the large Nordic newspapers. She has presented her work for government and practitioners nationally and abroad, and is co-editing the antology "Yrke, karriär och lön: Kvinnors och mäns olika villkor på den svenska arbetsmarknaden", which is published this Fall as part of a Swedish public reveiw (SOU). She has also contributed to events at NHH such as «Vår- og Høstkonferansen» and «Jentedagen".

Karin's work capacity is tremendous, and she is an important driving force at the Department of Finance. She is inspiring and fun to work with. She is also including and supportive, not least for the younger faculty members at the department. Karin is a sporty 50-year old who enjoys hiking and running. The rest of us strive to keep up with her speed!
