NHH to host seminar with Paul Krugman

NHH and Handelsbaken invite the winner of this year's Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics to Oslo. Professor Paul Krugman is visiting Norway on Friday the 5th of December; his last stop before the award ceremony in Stockholm.

"I'm very pleased that NHH, in cooperation with Handelsbanken, is hosting the seminar with this year's Nobel prize winner in economics," says Rector Jan I. Haaland. "Krugman is a very interesting lecturer, and the fact that he received the prize for his research contribution in international economics - a field which is strong at NHH and which I myself have a background in, makes it especially exciting," adds Haaland.

Professor Krugman is a much sought after lecturer. His lecture for Oslo is entitled Financial Crisis and Recession under President Obama. After the presentation there will be a debate with an expert panel.

"Paul Krugman is the most exciting Nobel Prize winner we have had in decades with regard to his contribution to the ongoing economic debate in the United States and incidentally the world," says professor øystein Thøgersen from the Department of Economics. "Few other economists have such strong views on how the United States economic policy should be shaped, as Krugman. Particularily his views on the facility of the U.S. fiscal policy remind me of the regulatory ambitions which we saw in Europe in 1960 and the mid 1970s."

The seminar which will take place in Oslo on Friday, December 5th at 15:00 has the following program:

• Welcome by rector Jan I. Haaland (NHH) and managing director Dag Tjernsmo (Handelsbanken)

• Introduction of this year's Nobel Memorial Prize winner by chief economist Knut Anton Mork

• Lecture by professor Paul Krugman: Financial Crisis and Global Recession under President Obama

• Debate led by Knut Anton Mork. Panel: NHH professors Victor D. Norman and øystein Thøgersen and political editor Sofie Mathiassen from Dagens Naeringsliv.

Invitation for the event is sent by Handelsbanken and NHH. Key leaders in Norwegian society and business are exclusively invited to the meeting with Krugman on December 5th.
