NHH awards ten Honorary Doctors

Ten new Honorary Doctors will be awarded in connection with the 75th Anniversary of the Norwegian School of Economics. Nobel Laureate Finn E. Kydland is among the new Honorary Doctors. His Majesty King Harald V of Norway will be present at the ceremony 7. September.

Finn E. Kydland is an NHH alumni educated in 1968. In the 60s and 70s he was employed as a Research Assistant and Associate Professor. He continued his career in the US but has served as an Adjunct Professor at NHH since 1993. Kydland became a Nobel Laureate in Economics in2004.

The Professors Jean-Paul Larçon and B. Espen Eckbo are among the new Honorary Doctors. Larçon is the former Rector of the highest ranked business school in Europe, HEC Paris. The professor has contributed to the establishment and development of new business schools in Eastern Europe in connection with NHH after the collapse of the iron curtain. Eckbo is a Norwegian professor of finance at Tuck School of Business in the US and has contributed to the high level of research and teaching at NHH over many years.

Together with seven other internationally renowned professors, these scholars will be given the award as Honorary Doctors in a ceremony at NHH Wednesday 7. September 2011.

The title doctor honoris causa is given only to persons who have distinguished themselves in the academic fields covered by NHH.

- The Honorary Doctors have all distinguished themselves internationally by remarkable academic contributions of the highest quality. They have also contributed to the academic development of our school and to strengthening the international relations of NHH and our international reputation, says Jan I. Haaland, Rector at NHH.

It is only during anniversary celebrations that NHH awards Honorary Doctors. With those awarded during the ceremony on 7 September, NHH will have awarded 19 Honorary Doctors in total. The first six were awarded at the 50th Anniversary in 1986, the three remaining at the 60th Anniversary in 1996.


The ten new Honorary Doctors are:

Professor Richard P. Bagozzi , Dwight F. Benton Professor of Behavioral Science in Management, Stephen M. Ross School of Business, Professor of Social and Administrative Sciences, College of Pharmacy, University of Michigan (USA).
Research areas: Marketing, social science methodology and psychology

Professor Richard Blundell, David Ricardo Professor of Political Economy, University College London (UK). Research Director, Institute for Fiscal Studies.
Research areas: Labour markets, education, taxation, consumer behaviour and econometrics.


Professor B. Espen Eckbo Tuck Centennial Chair Professor of Finance, and Founding Director, Lindenauer Center for Corporate Governance, Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College (USA). Adjunct Professor, NHH (Norway).
Research areas: corporate finance and capital markets, with emphasis on investment banking, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions.

Professor William W. Hogan, Raymond Plank Professor of Global Energy Policy, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Research Director of the Harvard Electricity Policy Group (HEPG), Harvard University (USA).
Research areas: competitive electricity markets.

Professor Finn E. Kydland, Jeff Henley Professor of Economics, University of California, Santa Barbara (USA). The Richard P. Simmons Distinguished Professorship; University Professor of Economics, Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University (USA). Adjunct Professor, NHH (Norway).
Research areas: Dynamic macroeconomic theory and business cycles, international economics, labor economics and public economics.

Professor Ann Langley, Professor, Department of Management, the Canada Research Chair in Strategic Management in Pluralistic Settings, HEC Montréal (Canada). Adjunct Professor, NHH (Norway).
Research areas: strategic change processes.

Professor Jean-Paul Larçon, Professor and Senior Associate Dean for International Development, HEC Paris (France).
Research Areas: strategy in international management

Professor William F. Messier Jr., Kenneth and Tracy Knauss Endowed Chair in Accounting, Department of Accounting, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (USA). PWC Professor II, Department of Accounting, Auditing and Law, NHH (Norway).
Research areas: Accounting and auditing

Professor Patrick Rey, Professor of Economics, Université Toulouse I Capitole, member of Institut d'Économie Industrielle (IDEI) and Toulouse School of Economics (France).
Research areas: Microeconomics, including industrial organization, contract theory, economics of information, competition law and policy, regulation and corporate finance.

Professor Katherine Schipper, Thomas F Keller Professor, Fuqua School of Business, Duke University (USA). Research area: Empirical research on financial accounting
