Strategic capacity planning in Elkem ASA
During the last years, there have been dramatic changes in the markets for silicon and ferrosilicon metals where the profit margins have been squeezed to a minimum. This has resulted in major restructuring processes in the industry and several companies have closed down furnaces and plants.

Elkem ASA is a large producer of silicon and ferrosilicon metals in Europe and North America. In the last couple of years, they have been forced to put large emphasis on strategic planning issues related to capacity planning, investments in equipment and allocation of production orders. In this process, the company has made use of an optimization model to support their analyses.

In this presentation, I will give an introduction to this important strategic planning problem for the company and comment upon the cooperation between Elkem ASA and the university. Further, I will describe some elements of the underlying mathematical model and the development of the decision support tool for the company. Some results will be presented. The presentation ends up with a short discussion of the use of such models for these types of planning problems and future research and cooperation with Elkem ASA.
