Abstract:
"Asymmetric information implies that borrowers are locked into relationships with their main banks. I study whether banks choose an efficient lending policy taking into account that they have private information about their borrowers. Competition from arms-length financing and other banks may induce banks to focus on particular groups of borrowers. I examine the link between competition and financial fragility in a market with tight bank relationships."
